Sports outlook
(Sports Column ~ 03/14/04)
On the morning of Feb. 16, I made certain to turn the television on to Channel 12 at 9 a.m. in order to watch Regis Philbin. Philbin, you see, is as big a Yankee fan as was ever born. He gloats over every Red Sox misfortune and still goes on about Babe Ruth as do all the obnoxious Yankee fans. And he didn't disappoint. He must have spent a full 10 minutes gloating over his team's latest acquisition...

Outdoor living
(Sports Column ~ 03/14/04)
The calendar may say it's still winter, but signs of spring are popping up all over and causing anglers to have visions of spawning white bass, crappie and walleye, among other things. Yesterday, we picked several hundred yellow daffodils (my favorite flower) and they are scattered in vases throughout the house. Over the years, I have noticed the fishing really picks up when the daffodils are in bloom...

At randon
(Column ~ 03/14/04)
Ginny and I went to lunch Tuesday with Janet Wray and her daughter Tina. Tina's been putting on a lot of weight lately, and, instead of politely letting that slide, I figured honesty is the best policy. "Tina," I said, "you're sure putting on a lot of weight these days." People from nearby tables turned around to catch sight of this rude boor...

The third cup
(Column ~ 03/14/04)
Hi neighbors. Pour some coffee, use cream and sugar if you want. Sit back and perk up your ears because I want to get some things off my chest. As someone once said, "just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean some one isn't out to get you." Taking that another step, just because I sometimes forget some things, doesn't mean I can't remember any things. And, just because I need glasses to read, doesn't mean I can't see the writing on the wall...

Energy costs on the rise
(Local News ~ 03/14/04)
By Steve Moyer According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Energy Center, gasoline prices rose more than nine cents per gallon since OPEC announced in early February it was cutting production. Higher energy prices affect the price of everything from the cost of an annual vacation to the price of food on the table every day, but its effect is most noticeable at the pump...

Cottey tour sticks with itinerary after Madrid tragedy
(Local News ~ 03/14/04)
Cottey students touring Spain have continued their previously-scheduled plans -- with a few minor exceptions -- in the wake of train system bombing in Madrid, where 119 Cottey students were staying as part of a n international cultural experience. Although news reports now claim that more than 190 people were killed in the bombings, which occurred Thursday in Spain's capital city, no Cottey students were injured...
