Jewell Faye Durst, 87, Nevada, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 16. 2007 at Christian Healthcare in Nevada. She was born on Nov. 7, 1920, in Howell County, Mo., to Floyd W. Smith and Inez M. Jones Smith. Jewell attended Franklin Grade School and graduated from Nevada High School, in 1938. ...

Vernon County commissioners opened the 2008 budget hearings on Dec. 3, meeting with the majority of Vernon County's elected officials in a lengthy process that took several days. Meetings to discuss 2007's spending and projected income and spending for the General Revenue Fund in 2008 began last Thursday morning with Doug Shupe, Vernon County's Recorder of Deeds. ...

Enrollment in spring classes is continuing at the Nevada Campus of Crowder College. Classes start on Jan. 14, but campus director Donna Thomas said enrollment is allowed through the first week of classes. While several classes have already reached maximum enrollment, many classes are still available...

The Vernon County Sheriff's Office, the Nevada Police Department and the Community Narcotics Enforcement Task Force worked together and served a search warrant at 621 South Commercial on Friday, Jan. 7. Authorities found methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, stolen property and an altered firearm -- a sawed-off shotgun. Larry Fenton, Nevada was charged with possession of a controlled substance. Federal firearms violations are pending in the case...

The airport runway could be opened as soon as next week -- then again, maybe not. Although the runway itself is complete, there still needs to be some work done on the turn-around at the south end to resolve a drainage issue. "It is really too flat and water pools on it," said Randy Marti, Nevada's administrative services director, said Thursday afternoon that the Missouri Department of Transportation would not approve opening the runway as long as water stands on the turn-around...

A Nevada salon participating in a national competition to raise money for cancer fund brought in enough money to place 20th out of 2,700 salons across America and Canada. Smart Style Salon, located within Nevada's Wal-Mart, raised $1,450 for the Regis Foundation for Breast Cancer Research in one month...

The Nevada seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams swept all four games with the Joplin South Middle School boys Thursday night at the Nevada Middle School gymnasium. The Nevada seventh grade A-team beat Joplin South 44-39 while the Nevada B-team dominated Joplin south 26-6 in a game shortened with a running clock for the entire game...
