Frances Jennine Clemensen, 80, of Florissant, Mo., formerly of Nevada, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., following a lengthy illness. She was born on Dec. 11, 1928, to Mrs. and Mrs. Frank Crews. She married Jack Martin Clemensen on April 30, 1946, in Yuma, Ariz., and he preceded her in death in November 2000...

Eva Scotten, 65, of Harwood, Mo., died on Sept. 9, 2009, at her home in Harwood. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 11, at the Harwood Baptist Church. August 11 the Vernon County commissioners opened bids on jail equipment that would increase officer safety as well as the safety of prisoners. The equipment was purchased with funds from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Grant. Once the bids were received Vernon County Sheriff Ron Peckman checked the bids to see that they met the bid criteria and the commissioners then gave the thumbs up for the purchase...

Two local groups that provide help for veterans are partnering together to present a veteran's fair Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Nevada Elks Lodge and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars have invited representatives from national and state government, health care providers and veterans service organizations to the event...

The Vernon County Youth Fair Goat Committee will hold their fundraising Boer Goat Show at the Vernon County Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 12-13. The event is organized by the youth fair goat committee and held to "raise money to buy new pens for the sheep, goat barn at the Vernon County Fairgrounds." This year's competition is also sanctioned by the American Boer Goat Association and the Missouri Junior Boer Goat Association and will feature three separate judging events judged by three different judges.. ...

Three parents spoke at the Nevada R-5 Board of Education meeting Wednesday evening concerning the recently enacted drug-testing policy at the high school. One patron, Mike Freeze who had spoken beforehand to R-5 Superintendent David Stephens, Ph.D., presented a study he said showed that drug-testing students actually hurt the educational process. Stephens said he thought the study was not accurate and he didn't believe it. Freeze then stormed out of the meeting...
