Seven years ago, wrestling coach Chip Balk formed the Tiger Pit Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling club to introduce the Olympic wrestling forms to Nevada High School wrestlers. Back then, the club only had four wrestlers and a coach. Spenser Daniels, Mason Heard, Cole Bond and Thor Herda all went on to have outstanding NHS wrestling careers...

The Hume Lady Hornets varsity volleyball team added four more strong performances to their record with recent victories over Sheldon, Bronaugh, Ballard and Drexel. In the first of those four matches, the Lady Hornets hosted Sheldon, earning a strong two-set victory. The Lady Panthers mad a game of it in both sets, but ultimately fell short by the final scores of 25-19 and 25-17...

The Nevada Middle School seventh grade football A and B teams hosted Joplin South Tuesday night with mixed results. In the B game, Ryan Ferris scored two touchdowns for the Tigers while Tristan Smith completed a two-point conversion, but that wasn't quite enough as Joplin took a 20-14 victory. Brandon Barker led the Tigers' A team with two touchdowns of his own as Nevada took an eight-point victory by a final score of 14-6...

Mother Nature has forced the Nevada High School athletic department to make a number of revisions to this week's sports schedules. The Nevada High School cross country team was set to head to Carl Junction, Mo., Thursday for a dual meet, but large amounts of continuing rainfall forced the cancellation of that meet. No rescheduling efforts will be made...

The Nevada Middle School volleyball A and B teams concluded their regular season with two very strong performances this week. On Monday, the Tigers hosted Joplin East in one of their toughest matches of the season. In the B game, Joplin was able to stay close, but still ultimately ended up on the short end of both sets, losing 25-18 and 25-19...

A preliminary hearing for Charles Stewart, Schell City, was once again postponed by agreement between the Vernon County Prosecutor Lynn Ewing III and the attorney for Stewart, Eric Landoll. No new date was listed on Case.net for the hearing. Stewart is charged with two counts of arson and one count of knowingly burning or exploding stemming from a fire July 4 which began in an unoccupied dwelling and spread from there to a storage building to the west owned by the Schell City Methodist Church and from a separate incident in June.. ...

The Nevada R-5 School District hopes voters will say yes in November to maintaining a funding mechanism that's been in place for 10 years. In 1999, voters OK'd a Proposition C waiver, which allows the school district to glean all of a 1-cent sales tax. ...
