In 1943, facing a shortage of nurses caused by the needs of World War II, the Federal Government established the Cadet Nurse Corps. Originally designated the Victory Nurses Corps, the mission was to persuade more young women to join the ranks of the nursing profession. Three men entered the residence of Chuck and Linda Scammell Monday at approximately 10:45 p.m. All three were white; one is described as very tall, 6 foot 2 inches, medium build around 250 pounds with a sandy colored mustache, a second is described as5 foot 10 inches, very skinny, and the third is described as 5 foot 5 inches, heavy set and "kind of husky." All three were wearing dark ski masks, dark jackets, blue jeans and gloves. It is unknown what type of vehicle they were driving...

Margie Sara May Houston, age 95, of Lamar, passed away Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Carthage, Mo. Margie was born Oct. 25, 1914, in Stotes-bury, the youngest of the six children of Abram and Kathryn (Boyd) Rutherford. She graduated from Stotesbury High School in 1933 and attended Fort Scott College. ...

Dorothy Lee Gensler, 69, Nevada, Mo., died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Freeman Health Systems, Joplin. She was born Feb. 16, 1940, in Nevada, Mo., to Charles William Ryan and Hattie Marie May Ryan. Dorothy was born and reared in Nevada and spent virtually her entire life here. She was a homemaker and liked playing bingo, and embroidery...

Erma J. Eador, age 66, of Nevada, died on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. She was born July 15, 1943, in Paris, Texas, to Ralph D. Meacham and Olivia M. Holland Meacham. Erma was married to John Eador on June 1, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, and he survives of the home...

Larry Hurst, 61, of rural Girard, Kan., longtime teacher and coach, was pronounced dead in the emergency room of the Girard Medical Center at 5:15 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. Death was unexpected. He was born Aug, 5, 1948, in Parsons, to Cecil and Bonnie Jean (Stice) Hurst. He grew up and attended school in Erie and graduated from Erie High School. He attended Independence Junior College and Pittsburg State University, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees...
