The Stars and Stripes shone brightly for the Fifth Annual Lighthouse Gala. On Saturday, guests from El Dorado Springs, Stockton, Nevada and beyond gathered at the First Baptist Church's Family Life Center in El Dorado Springs to "Salute the Arts." A man already registered as a sex offender was arrested Saturday by Vernon County deputies on new charges of forcible rape and statutory sodomy. Nathaniel W. Pierce, 35, of rural Sheldon was taken into custody on a 24-hour hold until formal charges could be filed. The charges were filed Sunday in Vernon County Circuit Court. Both charges are unclassified felonies, for which he could be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole or serve a minimum of 30 years...

Work to convert the 30th Road overpass to an interchange at Interstate 49 south of Lamar has been postponed until the week of May 13 at the earliest, the Missouri Department of Transportation said. With more rain in the forecast, the start date could be further delayed...

This week, the Nevada High School Youth Enrichment Services student group is sponsoring "Safe and Sober Pledge Week," asking students to pledge that they won't drink alcohol. Students are asked to sign a pledge card and have their parents sign the same one. The card states that the student pledges to not drink, or at least to not drink until they are age 21...

Emergency personnel from several agencies are on their way to Medicalodges of Nevada, 1210 W. Ashland, where a fire has been reported. Scanner traffic confirmed there is a small fire. Residents were being evacuated. No confirmation of any injuries although ambulances were being summoned to "cardiac events."...

The source of smoke at Medicalodges of Nevada was an air conditioner motor that burned out. Other than the motor, no damage was reported. Also, no injuries were reported. A woman at the scene suffered an apparent heart attack and was transported by ambulance to Nevada Regional Medical Center...
