Mary Jane Wellington, 87, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away Sept. 12, 2013. Mary Jane was born in Deerfield, Mo., and had lived in this area most of her life. She worked for Procter and Gamble for many years before her retirement. Mary Jane was a member of the Methodist faith and was a volunteer at Kingswood. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Billy Wellington. Survivors include seven nieces and nephews; and 14 great-nieces and -nephews and their families...

Bobby and Tina Trotter are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Mabrey Grace Trotter. Mabrey was born Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at Nevada Regional Medical Center. She weighed 9 pounds, 2 ounces, and measured 21 inches.

In the Schell City Fall Festival horseshoe tournament 15 teams competed and raised $270 for community betterment. Marion and Oren Harris won the competition.

According to a press release from the Vernon County Sheriff's Office, Stormy Miller, 22, of Nevada was arrested Tuesday after a traffic stop in Nevada for the possession of a firearm and an explosive device. According to the release, Chief Deputy Shayne Simmons, and Sheriff Jason Mosher were following up on leads they had received about a suspicious vehicle at Elmwood Apartments. The vehicle matched the description of a truck that had run from sheriff's deputies late Tuesday night of last week...

The Nevada Lady Tigers tennis team made its return to the courts at Nevada High School Tuesday and put on its strongest performance of the season, dominating the Lady Tigers of Lamar by a final score of 9-0. The Lady Tigers finished the night with two victories by way of shutouts and two more that came close. ...

JOPLIN -- The Cottey College Comets volleyball team fell to 1-6 on the season Tuesday night with a three-set loss to Ozark Christian College, by the final scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-20. "Their serving kept us out of system most of the evening, which then left us playing defense a lot," Comets head coach Marla Kannady Foreman said. "I can't really think of any one player who stood out for the Comets."...

The Nevada Tigers and Lady Tigers cross country runners competed Tuesday at Bolivar. Ben Sommer finished 24th in the varsity boys' 5,000-meter race with a time of 18 minutes, 44 seconds and Kieran Cain was 99th at 23:02.
