The St. Joseph Mustangs earned their second MINK League championship in as many seasons — with 2020's lost season lingering between the two — by beating the Sedalia Bombers 12-2 this past weekend at Phil Welch Stadium. The blowout was St. Joseph's second win in the best-of-three championship series, following last week's 9-7 road victory in game one...

Back in February, when Dr. Maryann Mitts was introduced as the new athletic director and head basketball coach at Cottey College, she called the opportunity a dream come true. On Monday, after making a few introductions of her own — for her first three department hires: a new assistant hoops coach, a new esports head coach, and a new flag football head coach and sports information director — Mitts indicated she has yet to be pinched awake from her reverie...

In the heat of summer, there's nothing better than a scoot and a dip. At least, that is how area teenagers Dalton McIntire and Grayston Buxton would have liked to have spent their Tuesday — first by working up a sweat performing tricks on their scooters at Walton Skate Park, then by cooling off in the water at the nearby Walton Aquatic Center. ...

The Vernon County Health Department recently released an update to county COVID-19 numbers. The county's total number of COVID-19 cases is now at 2,468. There have been 107 new cases and of these, 64 are still active — having increased from last week's active cases number of 41...

Cottey College, together with the City of Nevada and the Nevada/Vernon County Chamber of Commerce, will host the 2021 Community Picnic and Partner Fair on Friday, Aug. 20, from 6-8 p.m., at the Franklin P. Norman Community Center. Local businesses, civic organizations, and churches are invited to register for the event that is designed to showcase the community to incoming Cottey College students and their families...
