Wrappin' it all up
Salvation Army volunteers Florence Fritts, left, gets a helping hand from fellow volunteer Janet Gant as she wraps a gift purchased by a child whose holiday shopping was sponsored by the Vernon County Salvation Army during a shopping spree providing children in families facing financial hardship the opportunity to get gifts for their families. In the background, Carion Rumans, Betsy Rolands, Kitty Scarborough, Lee Ann Smith and Chris Copeland wrap gifts as well. Children bought all sorts of gifts for family members -- toys, games, practical gifts and even a few gag gifts -- each with a special person in mind, and each selected by a child wearing a heartfelt smile. Volunteers got up early and headed to the Wal-Mart SuperCenter by 7 o'clock that morning to begin the event -- but one volunteer noted the event was more fun than last year's -- because last year, they had get going at 6 a.m. More than 60 children participated, with the help of dozens of volunteers who helped the children select gifts, wrapped and tagged the presents and provided transportation for those who needed it. During the event, the children each received a gift as well. Face painting and a visit with Santa topped off the fun.
