Man rescued from wreckage

Sunday, January 11, 2004

Firefighters use the jaws of life to free a Lamar man from his vehicle after he suffered injuries in a traffic accident Friday afternoon about 3 p.m., on U.S. Highway 71 about one mile north of Sheldon. Jack Brous, 81, Lamar, Mo., was driving southbound in the right lane of traffic in a white Chevrolet pickup truck pulling a small trailer. He crossed the center line while another driver, Joseph Mandella, Bentonville, Ark., was attempting to pass in a Volvo tractor trailer. Brous' trailer struck the tractor-trailer, causing his pickup to jackknife into the path of the tractor-trailer, becoming wedged at the front of the tractor. Both vehicles ran off the right side of the roadway, up and down an embankment before separating and coming to rest about 800 feet south of the point of impact. Brous was transported to Barton County Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries, and his truck was totaled. Mandella was not injured, and his rig received moderate damage. No summons have been issued at this time.
