100 Years Ago -- February 6, 1904

FROM ST. LOUIS -- Cash wheat sold on the floor of the Merchant's Exchange yesterday at $1 per bushel. It is a long time since the flour producing cereal has reached that altitudinous figure, the dollar.

Leiter of Chicago cornered wheat in 1898, which sent the price up to $1.85. Many times since then the price go into the nineties, but no further.

AROUND TOWN -- On March 15th, D.M. Taul will retire as superintendent of the County Poor Farm and a new superintendent will take charge. Mr. Taul will not be an applicant for the place again but no doubt other parties, in fact two applicants have already been filed.

75 Years Ago -- February 6, 1929

The farmers of Vernon County estimate their horses at 8,890, mules 2,300, milk cows 12,730, and other cattle 14,970.

Values per head have increased but number of milk cows and hogs have decreased, figures based on the first day of the year.

Horses on Missouri farms total 574,000 against 604,000 valued at $53 per head against $50 in 1928.

Horses continue to decline in numbers.

50 Years Ago -- February 6, 1954

The Vernon County District of the Boy Scouts joins with Scouts and leaders over the nation in the observance of National Boy Scout Week, which starts today and continues through next Saturday. Irv Cobb of Nevada is chairman of the Vernon District. The Vernon District has ten troops.

The troops are: Troop 30, Liberal, sponsored by the Liberal Chamber of Commerce. Troop 41, Lamar, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club; Troop 42, Nevada, sponsored by the Wesley Brotherhood, Troop 44, Nevada sponsored by the First Christian Church; Troop 55, Nevada, sponsored by the Brotherhood of the First Baptist Church; Troop 57, Nevada, sponsored by the Nevada Elks Lodge; Troop 77, Deerfield, sponsored by the Deerfield P.T.A.; Troop 83, Golden City, sponsored by the Golden City Rotary Club; Troop 144, Nevada, sponsored by St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Troop 145, Moundville, sponsored by the Moundville P.T.A.

EVE EVENTS -- Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brock are now moving their furniture from their old house into a portion of their new home. They are finishing their living room and kitchen. Mr. Brock's health is somewhat improved and they hope to finish the home they started about two years ago.
