The Nevada Tigers cross country team competed in a quadrangular meet in Joplin Tuesday, and placed three runners in the top 10.
While team scores were not kept in what amounted to a practice for the harriers.
Jim Fay was Nevada's fastest runner in the two-mile race, finishing fourth overall with a time of 11 minutes, 9 seconds.
Mason Benn was right behind him at 11:12 to finish sixth and freshman Trevor Hinkle was ninth overall with a time of 11:37.
"It went well," Nevada coach Robert Watts said. "Trevor Hinkle really ran well."
Watts said the race would help him determine who will be on the varsity team when the Tigers travel to Carthage for a meet Sept. 9.
Seven runners get to race on the varsity squad.
"It was a good indicator,' Watts said referring to the upcoming season. "I think we're going to be in the hunt for things."
Carthage, Webb City and Joplin were the other three teams in the quadrangular held at the campus of Missouri Southern State University.
The next meet, the Carthage Invitational, will feature nine teams and Watts is looking forward to seeing some district foes there such as Lamar and Carl Junction.
"It will be a pretty good-sized meet," he said.
On the girls side, Vanessa Hancock was Nevada's fastest runner, finishing in 15:10.
She was followed by middle-schooler Leanne Sone who finished in 16:40 as all the runners competed together.
