Fort Scott, Kan. --Tickets are now on sale for the 23rd Annual Candlelight Tour at Fort Scott National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park System. The candlelight tour will be held Friday, Dec. 3, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 9 p.m. with tours being offered every 10 minutes during these times.
During the event, more than 700 candle lanterns will illuminate the site and people in the various scenes will be dressed in period costume. This year, the candlelight tour will focus on the Bleeding Kansas era when Kansans fought each other over the issue of slavery in the territory.
Nevada volunteers involved in this year's tour are Kris Korb and Samantha Melech. Kris Korb has worked for Cottey College for several years as the coordinator of campus activities. She has also volunteered at Fort Scott National Historic Site for several years, helping with candlelight tour and other special events, and she has also assisted with visitor surveys.
Newlywed Samantha Melech (formerly Geertsen) is a native of Nevada and has volunteered at Fort Scott NHS for the last 10 years since she was 8 years old. She has helped with the candlelight tour and other special events. An aspiring singer and songwriter, Samantha has performed in events at the site as well as other contests and shows throughout the area. Korb will be a tour leader assistant on this year's tour and Melech will be a participant in one of the scenes.
These and many more talented individuals are participating in this year's candlelight tour at Fort Scott. Guests will see the Fort lit by candle lantern and witness events of long ago, as guides offer the opportunity to learn more about an issue that divided a town, a territory and an entire nation.
Tickets, which are $7 each, must be reserved and purchased in advance. Individuals or groups buying 10 or more tickets for Friday night tours will receive their tickets for $5 each. After Dec. 2, all ticket prices increase to $9. Tickets may be picked up at the site or reserved by calling (620)223-0310.
