Living history interpreter Dakota Russell will present a special program about the lives of Daniel and Nathan Boone during the Vernon County Historical Society's quarterly meeting, to be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 10, at the Bushwhacker Museum.
Russell is an interpreter at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site in Ash Grove, Mo. The site, which has only been open to the public for two years, is one of the newest in the Missouri State Parks system. Russell's work at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site predates the opening.
He has been at the site nearly four years, assisting in research and helping to plan the restoration of the Nathan Boone home.
Russell has worked with Missouri State Parks since the age of 16, when he began as a part-time interpreter at Battle of Lexington State Historic Site.
He also worked at Confederate Memorial State Historic Site before accepting a position at Nathan Boone Homestead Historic Site.
"Fortunate Son" is one of the first living history presentations Russell created at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site. In this program, Russell takes on the role of 25-year-old Nathan Boone.
As Boone, Russell discusses Daniel Boone's overnight celebrity, the Boone family's move to Missouri, and Nathan Boon's new roles as a market hunter and saltmaker.
After the program, the audience will be invited to ask questions, first of Boone, and then of Russell.
"Fortunate Son" gives insight into the life of a famous Missourian and the world of one of America's most famous families.
