100 years ago:

Oil and gas development takes place in Liberal

The Liberal, Mo., Commercial Club which has been in correspondence with President Pierson of the Nevada Gas, Oil and Asphalt Company has signified its acceptance of a proposition from the company to put down a well in that locality. All that Liberal has to do, says the Enterprise, is to buy, or see that someone buys 10,000 shares of stock in said company at 10 cents a share and the drilling will be done.

75 years ago:

Mayor arraigned at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Mayor Thomas H. Gideon, indicted Saturday by a federal grand jury on charges of participating in a conspiracy to violate the prohibition laws and accepting bribes of money and whisky from bootleggers, formally was arraigned before Judge A.L. Reeves yesterday and entered a plea of not guilty. His trial was set for July 7. The mayor announced he would not resign and disclaimed any improper conduct.

50 years ago:

Nevada Library robbed of $29 during night

Last night burglars escaped with an estimated $26.69 in cash and a $4 check after breaking into the Nevada Public Library.

Chief of Police Darrell E. Estes Jr., said this morning that entrance was gained between 9 p.m., last night and 7 o'clock this morning when the burglary was discovered by Clarence Fraley, janitor for the building.

Chief Estes said that the intruders broke open a basement window in the southeast corner of the library, then forced a door into the hallway. They also broke open a supply locker, a metal door to electric switches and ransacked all the desk drawers in the library.
