Track Reporter
The cars were flying, the fans were cheering and racing was excellent! Lots of action kept the fans on their feet cheering for their favorite drivers. Drivers want all the points they can get and are driving hard to get them, which always brings us lots of excitement. Several positions changed in the points standings and next week will probably see more changes. Saturday will be a regular race night with a Mini Stock special on tap for July 23. You don't want to miss any of the action so join us each and every week this year at the biggest little race track in the country to catch all the action.
Late Model heat race winners were Rusty Skaggs, Fort Scott, Kan., and Jack Simmons, Erie, Kan. Shannon Phillips got the lead at the start of the Feature. Jack Simmons and Darrin Barton tangled and spun, collecting Marty Danner. This brought out the yellow and closed the field behind Phillips for the restart. Skaggs powered around the high side of the track and gained the lead. Skaggs and Simmons were battling for the lead when Jason Estes spun, collecting Mike Boultinghouse and the yellow flew. This closed the field behind Skaggs and Simmons for the restart. Skaggs was able to maintain the lead and collect the win, his third of the season.
Modified heat race winners Tony Palmer and Kevin Morrow were both from Nevada. On the first attempt to start the Feature, Brantlee Gotschall bounced in the air and landed on the tire of Craig Wood. Both went to the pits for new rubber and an original lineup restart was called for. On the second attempt to start the Feature Daniel Anders and Kevin Morrow got together and both went spinning resulting in another yellow flag and another original lineup restart. This time Palmer got the lead. Gene Hogan spun and got tagged by Morrow, bringing out another yellow flag. Palmer led the field down to the restart with Dustin Campbell right on his back bumper. Morrow spun out and went round and round on the track before the yellow flew. Palmer was in the lead on the restart. As the race progressed, Morrow made his way through the field to claim the lead and collect the win, his third of the season.
Street Stock heat race winners were Joe Davis, Carthage, and Karl Lehmann, Nevada. Kris Nelson got the lead at the start of the Feature, went high in the corner and Joe Davis captured the lead. Craig Spencer claimed the lead and Davis came right back to take the lead one more time. The yellow flew as John Martin had problems and this put Spencer back in the lead for the restart. Spencer built up a big lead, which was erased as Denny Chrisenbery got turned around and collected Davis, bringing out the yellow flag and closing the field behind Spencer for the restart. Spencer went on to capture the win, his fifth of the season.
Factory Stock heat race winners were Foxie Sumner and Slade Williams, both from Nevada. Norman Mackley got the lead at the start of the Feature. Foxie Sumner was able to pass him on the inside of the track. Dustin Wyland spun onto one of the retaining tires, which brought out the yellow flag. Another original lineup restart was called for and this time Sumner got the lead. Williams spun bringing out the yellow flag and closing the field behind Sumner for the restart. Shawn Hendren got a good jump on this start and assumed the lead. Wyland again spun, bringing out the yellow flag and this placed Sumner back in the lead for the restart. Sumner held the lead through several more caution periods with Hendren right on his bumper and Ken Layman right behind him. Both drivers tried to pass Sumner at the same time but Sumner held them off. Just as the white flag flew Sumner's car went up in a big cloud of smoke and Hendren hit him. This brought out a yellow flag and closed the field behind Hendren for the restart. Layman was right behind and trying for the lead when Hendren went high in the corner allowing Layman to capture the lead. Layman maintained the lead and collected the win, his fourth of the season.
Mini Stock heat race winners were Robert Somers, El Dorado Springs, and Brandon Leer, Nevada. Somers got the lead at the start of the Feature. Although it looked like a major crunch was about to happen, all the cars got straightened out and the race continued. Shane Jacobs was able to take the lead. Allen Sanders spun bringing out the yellow flag and closing the field behind Jacobs for the restart. Brandon Leer claimed the lead. Mark Godsey and Kyle Wellner got together, bouncing in the air, and this brought out the yellow flag so the cars could be untangled. Leer was in the lead for the restart and never looked back as he claimed the win, his second of the year.
