Cottey College welcomes students for new year
Nevada Daily Mail
The annual rite of fall begins as new students move to Cottey College and Nevada. First-year students begin arriving Friday, Aug. 18, followed shortly thereafter by the arrival of the second-year students on Sunday, Aug. 20. The citizens of Nevada and surrounding communities are to be advised of the forthcoming increase in pedestrian traffic on Austin Boulevard and are asked to exercise caution.
Orientation activities will include a community picnic at Marmaduke Park, 6-8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 19. The public is invited to the picnic, and there is no charge. Many groups, organizations and individuals see the picnic as an opportunity to introduce themselves to incoming Cottey students and to help them get to know more about their home away from home.
Officially, the beginning of the academic year will arrive with the opening convocation at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 21, in the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts auditorium.
Missouri Supreme Court Justice Mary Rhodes Russell will be the speaker. Following her speech, students will participate in the one of the oldest traditions on campus, the signing of the Cottey book.
To help Nevada merchants extend greetings to the families and students, the college sent "Welcome Cottey" signs to every business in town. Those who would like more signs may call (417) 667-8181, ext. 2140.
