FORT SCOTT, Kan. -- Senior Jacob Lattimer scored three touchdowns and sophomore Alec Ramirez had an interception and a fumble recovery in Fort Scott High School's annual Red and White Scrimmage at Frary Field Friday night.

The Tigers had a few penalties, especially on the part of the junior varsity units. But the varsity squad looks more than ready for the season opener against Southeast Kansas League rival Parsons, Sept. 1 at Frary Field.

"The kids really worked hard, all 60 of them," Fort Scott head coach Don Epps said. "Once again, our first groups on offense and defense looked really sharp tonight and I'm really pleased with that. Two hard weeks of practice have paid off so far and now the fun begins."

Lattimer had his share of fun on the first-team offense. He scored on a one-yard run, then again on the very next play as the ball was taken back to the 40-yard line. Later, Lattimer scored on a two-yard run.

Sophomore Aaron Judy hit senior receiver Cole Pruitt for a score from two yards out as the junior varsity units squared off. Later, senior cornerback Chris Banks had an interception as the No. 1 defense got to work against the JV offense.

"We looked sharp on defense," Epps noted as the No. 1 offense didn't allow the JV to get much yardage.

The freshmen started things off with about an hour of work with lost of offense. The White offense scored on its very first play, a 40-yard run by Blake Cowan. The ball went back to the 40 and the White team drove for a one-yard run by Gary Floyd.

The Red took over and scored on its very first play, a 40-yard quarterback keeper by Mike Karleskint. Later, Karleskint used a good block by Jacob Ruhl to score another TD from 40 yards out.

The White got two more scores. Cowen ran in from seven yards out on a play set up by a 35-yard pass from Ben Gettler to Evan Williams. Floyd had another TD run of 15 yards for the White while Denzell Davis scored on a 13-yard run for the Red.

Williams also had a fumble recovery during the freshman portion of the scrimmage.

The Tiger JV and freshman teams will open their seasons Tuesday, Sept. 5 at Parsons. The freshmen play first at 5 p.m. followed by the JV at about 7.

This coming week of practice will be used to polish up the execution and add a few more plays, Epps says.

"We have the bread-and-butter plays in now," Epps said. "Now we're going to polish and keep the kids healthy and keep their legs under them. We're going to practice hard, obviously, but we also want to be 100-percent for Friday night."
