The season's genealogical inquiries

Thursday, August 31, 2006

Summarized below are some of the genealogical inquiries received in recent months by the Vernon County Historical Society. Readers interested in, or having information about, any of these families are invited to contact the inquirer directly, or the VCHS, at Bushwhacker Museum, open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays, telephone (417) 667-9602.

Scott

My great-grandparents were Eneas G. and Jane Back Scott. Their son, Lewis, is my grandfather. In the 1903 Vernon County plat book I found their property east of Nevada, in between where the rail lines start to diverge. I've not been able to find any death records. Can you tell me anything about Scott Cemetery?

Lynne Scott Gould

lynnemike@earthlink. net.

Biography of E. G. Scott from the 1887 History of Vernon County was furnished, with other information. Scott Cemetery could not be identified.

Key

I am researching an ancestor, Jesse C. Key, who died after a barroom brawl in Clayton, Vernon County, on Jan. 1, 1899. An article in the Fort Scott Daily Monitor said an inquest was being held in Clayton by the Vernon County coroner, results not yet known.

The man in the fight with Key was Dan Peterson. Key resided in Fort Scott but had been living with his father-in-law Lewis Fritter.

Julia Drane Becker,

Santa Monica, Calif.

Circuit court information was furnished. Clayton is another name for Eve.

Burris

I would be interested to know if you have anybody in your Society who are related to Eden Burris, Civil War soldier, born March 23, 1829, in Indiana, died April 20, 1901, in Nevada, buried in the GAR plot, Deepwood Cemetery.

Charles Burris, eburr2@cox. net.

Humble

I would like to know if there is an obituary for Mrs. Margaret Humble, who died July 31,1940, in Osage Township.

Janet K. Pease, Arvada Colo.

Obituary was found and furnished.

Snelson

We received a telephone inquiry concerning the Snelson family, and furnished copies of probate records for Alfred Snelson and William Snelson, to: Janice Arnall, Granby, Mo.

Riley/Lindsey

I'm interested in purchasing copies of the probate papers for Elias Riley, died 1898, and Charles D. Lindsey, died 1911.

Jim Stevens, San Carlos Calif.

Probate and other Riley family info was furnished.

Meadows

Looking for information on the Abraham Meadows family, who lived in Drywood 1840-1880s. Cannot find siblings of Delilah Meadows, who married William H. Mayfield early 1880s, or information on her parents. There were 10 other children, including an older brother, John, not listed in 1880 census. Carol Wilcoxen, cbiv1942@AOL.com.

William Mayfield was an heir of Justin (or Justine) Mayfield.

Lile

My grandfather was Thomas E. Lile, born in your area around 1895, served in the Marine Corps in World War II, at some point lived at 604 1/2 E. Cherry in Nevada, whether as child or adult not known. His parents were Abraham Lile and Helena Jennings Barker Lynn. Thanks for your assistance so far.

Mitchell/Corbett

Seeking information on James Madison Mitchell, born in Kentucky, 1814; died 1898, buried, Mt. Vernon Cemetery; married Luvina Corbett, 1835; Mary Godfrey, 1878.

Wish to know James' father

Jackie Sands, Arizona, disands@peoplepc. com.

No information found on the father, but we furnished probate records for James and his first wife.

Lovell/Lovill

Interested in the family name Lovell, particularly probate files of Charles P. Lovell, since all the heirs match the children's names of William Radford Lovill.

Gary Elmlund, Woodbridge Va., GaryElmlund@sbeglobal. net.

Charles owned land in Washington and Lake Twps. We reported Lovell/Lovill burials throughout Vernon County.

Two Daniel(s)

I am told my grandmother Maida Daniels Milward was born Dec. 11, 1898, in Vernon County, to Marion and Anna Daniels; also, that she had a sister named Ada. Maida married James H. Milward, Dec. 14, 1912, in Bates County. Enclosed is a biography of a John Daniel (sic) brother of Marion, buried in Fairview Cemetery) residing in Lone Oak Township, from "The History of Cass and Bates Counties, Mo."
