Friday is the start of the Schell City Fall Festival, a two-day event that begins at 6:30 p.m., with an opening ceremony welcome by Mayor Dale Haddix, who will present the Citizen of the Year award, the Lawn of the Year award and introduce Grand Marshals Earl Ijams and Inez Revis.

The Fall Festival is more than simple entertainment for the people of Schell City, it is a fund-raiser for the Schell City Community Betterment Committee.

"We try to generate revenue to help around town," Jeannie Hoagland, Community Bet-terment chairperson, said. "We try to do something every year. We've helped with field trips for Northeast Vernon County School and refurbished the community building, This year we're helping with the sound system for the city park."

In addition to a silent auction, the committee generates revenue by selling tickets for a drawing. The grand prize is $500 in cash, with five runner-up prizes of $100.

"We usually do fairly well. It's all for a good cause," Hoagland said.

The Fall Festival Royalty Coronation will take place at 6:45 p.m., and the Son-sational Singers will begin entertaining the crowd at 7:15 p.m. Ruth, Mary and Beth will entertain the crowd at 7:45 p.m., and the street dance will begin at 8:30 p.m., after the silent auction results are known.

Saturday will begin with a pedal pull at 9:30 a.m., kids games on Main Street at 11 a.m., the baby contest will start at 12:30 p.m. and Paula Newman will entertain the crowds at 1:30 p.m., a hairy legs contest will take place at 2:45 p.m., and the parade will start at 3 p.m., Emily McConnaughey will entertain at 4 p.m., and the Schell City Fire Department Smorgas-bord will start at 5:30 and end at 7:30 p.m.

The talent show will begin at 5 p.m., with the lip sync contest at 6:30 p.m. A drawing for prizes will be held at 7:30 p.m.; and the street dance featuring a band named Off The Record will start at 8:30 p.m. Fireworks by Wilbur's Fireworks start at 10 p.m., during the band intermission, and all activities will come to an end at midnight.
