Greyhound men fall in season opener

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Fort Scott Community College's men's basketball team fell to Des Moines Area (Iowa) Community College in its season opener here Friday night, 64-59, at the Hutchinson Classic.
DMACC came into the game holding the No. 19 spot in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II pre-season poll. Fort Scott was scheduled to face the No. 7-ranked team in Division II, Hamilton (Neb.) here Saturday.
Sophomore Terrell Turner led the Greyhounds with 15 points while classmate Bateko Francisco followed with 14 and freshman Arsenio Williams added 10. However, Fort Scott shot just 30 percent from the field, making only 22 of 74 field-goal attempts. Turner was six for 22 while Francisco was four for 18.
FSCC was only four of 27 from three-point range as Francisco and freshman wing Kyle Cooper each went two for 10 from behind the arc.
Ashton Sauls led Des Moines Area with 16 points while Rodney Grace added 15 and John E. Holmes chipped in with 13. DMACC shot 45 percent from the field on 21 of 46.
Fort Scott led 34-29 at halftime but Des Moines Area went 11 of 21 from the field and 11 of 20 from the free-throw line in the second half. The Greyhounds were 11 of 39 from the floor in the final 20 minutes. They went to the charity stripe only five times in the second half, making two.
The 'Hounds outrebounded DMACC 48-39. Williams led Fort Scott with seven boards.
Sophomore Zach Freeman dished four of Fort Scott's eight assists. Francisco had four steals.
The Greyhounds committed only nine turnovers. DMACC committed 17.
