Elementary students at Bronaugh sing "America the Beautiful "during their Veterans Day ceremony Friday. Here they are signing "purple mountains majesty." Sixth graders also presented a history of the flag and explained the stars and stripes during the assembly. After the explanation the sixth graders folded the flag, demonstrating the proper technique. Students who attend the school and are descendants of Frances Scott Key, author of "The Star Spangled Banner," were also recognized.

Students in Schell City, Bronaugh and Nevada conducted special ceremonies Friday in honor of local veterans on Friday. In Nevada, 11 bells sounded at the 11th hour in honor of veterans; and at events held throughout the county, local veterans had the opportunity to speak to audiences and to educate the community.

Sgt. Chris Haynes spoke to the Bronaugh Veterans' Day assembly Friday about his experiences as a soldier overseas. Haynes was part of Operation Iraqi Freedom III. Haynes spent most of his time at a base near Tallil, Iraq, he said, working with cargo and escorting Iraqi workers on the base.
Northeast Vernon County Elementary School, Schell City, hosted its annual veterans' salute on Friday afternoon. Local veterans were invited to attend, and they were serenaded and saluted by the students and community. Above, three veterans of the Korean War era listen as the ceremony continues.
