Parade winners announced

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 918, was one of the first entries past the review stand during Friday night's parade. A small amount of snow and ice remained on the street from a snowstorm that occurred last week, but no mishaps relating to the snow were reported. The event was postponed a week due to the storm, which dumped more than 12 inches of snow on the area.

More than 50 entries braved Friday's cold but clear evening for the annual Vernon County Christmas parade, themed "All Wrapped Up."

Judges looked over each entry as it passed by a review stand, and frequently commented on the dazzling displays and spirited participants as the parade passed by the dozens of spectators who lined the streets. Winners were announced over the weekend.

The flag team of the Nevada High School Tiger Pride Marching Band opts for candy canes instead of traditional flags, as they join in the annual parade.

2006 Parade Winners

Adult Division

Third place, Vietnam Veterans Chapter No. 918; second place, Knights of Columbus; first place, Nevada Elks Lodge

Girl Scouts wrapped up in costumes, gift wrap, a gingerbread cookie and more for their entry in the parade.

Youth Division

Third place, Heartland Kids; second place, Cub Scout Pack No. 117; first place, Cub Scout Pack No. 23

Business Division:

Staff members, family and friends of the Nevada Daily Mail and Nevada News hopped on a float, accompanied by a reindeer up front, for that company's entry in the annual Vernon County Christmas parade on Friday.

The 2006 Spirit of Christmas Award for overall "Best of Show" is presented to the Nevada Area Girl Scouts. This award is sponsored by Ray's Trophies.

Winners may pick up awards at the Nevada/Vernon County Area Chamber of Commerce offices in the lower level of the Carnegie Building, located at Ash and Austin streets.
