Filing ends for seat on Nevada City Council

Filing has closed for a seat on the Nevada City Council, left vacant by the resignation of Dick Meyers, effective Dec. 31.

Voters will go to the polls in March to narrow the field for two seats -- the one vacated by Meyers, a term ending in April 2008, and the expiring term of Mayor Jim Rayburn.

A string of filings and withdrawals made sorting out the field confusing. Current candidates for the three-year term are Jim Rayburn, Mike Hutchens and Melissa Earll. Hutchens' name was omitted from previous reports due to an oversight. Two other candidates had originally filed but later withdrew -- Mickey Mason and Lynn Sheridan. Mason's name may appear on the ballot because he expressed a desire to withdraw after the deadline had closed.

Current candidates for Meyers' unexpired term are Joe Kraft, Jayne Novak, Tim Wells and Clinton McKenzie. Larry Delaney also filed but has withdrawn as well.
