Local church holds Missions Conference this week

Calvary Baptist Church will is holding a Missions Conference May 6 through 9. The focus of the conference will be on the Middle East. A different speaker will be present each evening. The featured speaker of the conference will be Samer Abdelrahman, a former Moslem who converted to Christianity in 1990. Abelrahman is now an Islamic Ministries Specialist with Avant Ministries, a Kansas City based organization.

Abdelrahman, born to a former Iraqi army officer turned businessman who had two wives and eight children, has long ties to the midwest, he was a student at Kansas City, Kansas Junior College. His wife, Amy, is an Iraqi-American born to an Iraqi father and American mother. She was kidnapped by her father during a divorce proceeding just days before a custody hearing and only returned after months away from her mother. Her story reverberates with the children of divorced parents.

Abelrahman has spoken to many groups about his experiences and has even helped the Army to train officers to deal with the Iraqi culture and the ubuiquitous bribery present in the country.
