Nevada boys and girls fall to Webb City Cardinals
The Nevada boys and girls varsity basketball teams both fell hard to the Webb City Cardinals.
The girls started off well, but were 2 for 5 from beyond the arc in the first period to Webb City's 1 for 3, allowing the Lady Tigers to come out with a 12-7 lead into the second. Webb City answered back in the second period, going on a 14-2 run to go into the half with a 23-17 lead.
Nevada shot 1 for 2 in treys in the second period but never made it to the free throw line. Webb City was aided by 1 trey in 5 attempts and 2 of 2 free throws in the period.
The second and third quarter were plagued by turnovers by Nevada and issues with shooting from both sides was a continuing story throughout the game. Webb City went to the free throw line 6 times in the third, going 7 for nine, pushing their total to 11 for 15 in the game.
Nevada went in to the final period trailing 46-29, but made a valiant effort, going 2 for 4 from beyond the arc and 5 for 5 from the line, but it would not be enough. The Lady Cardinals pulled off the win 58-52.
In a post game interview, Lady Tigers head coach Brent Bartlett said that the team wanted to slow the tempo and take care of the ball, but were unable to do so. The officiating in the game was also a major point of contention, with Nevada ending up on the wrong end of repeated no-calls.
"I was disappointed in the officiating, but that's not what beat us," Bartlett said.
The boys game also ended in a victory for Webb City.
The Tigers jumped out early in the first quarter to a 3-0 lead, and Nevada hit 2 of 5 from 3 point range, but Webb City would be aided by making 2 of 3 free throws and 2 of 3 treys on their way to a 16-8 lead.
In the second period, things got worse for the Tigers. Webb City dominated in the paint, allowing them to outscore the Tigers 16-1, for a 32-9 halftime lead. Nevada shot 2 for 10 treys, but made 2 of 3 free throws in the third, giving Webb City a 46-23 lead heading into the final period. Webb City never looked back in the fourth quarter, going to the line an amazing 10 times, making 13 of 20 shots on their way to a 61-40 win.
After the game, coach John McNeley said, "We played a lot of basketball 30 feet from the basket," he said.
