Nevada Tigers fall to Carthage
The Nevada Tigers baseball team's season came to an end in Carthage with a 6-2 loss Monday evening, in the Class 3 District 12 playoff game hosted by Carthage at Lawton Stadium. This was the second time in four days these two teams have faced off.
The Nevada team gave up three runs in the first inning and Carthage never looked back.
Junior pitcher Colby Shepherd started the game for Nevada and recorded the loss. Shepherd went 4 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on four hits while the defense committed two errors behind him. Shepherd committed the third error for Nevada. Jarrod Alexander took over on the mound and finished out the game giving up three runs on two hits.
One of the bright spots of the game was junior Ben Fisher, who went two for three and scored one run. Fisher singled in the sixth inning only to be followed by a bloop single up the middle by Shepherd. Senior Kyle Hughes, then sent a ball to the wall in left center, plating both Fisher and Shepherd and landing Hughes at second. Nevertheless, these sparks of offense were too little to late for the Nevada team as they watched their season come to a close. Junior Clint Spencer, starting pitcher for Carthage, went the distance giving up the two runs on four hits, with his team committing one error in his victory.
After the game, Nevada Head Coach Jared Brown said, "Our group played hard and I am proud of each of our guys." He went on to say "We hit the ball really hard but right at them, our hats are off to those guys, they played a great game."
With the season coming to a close, Nevada will lose four seniors. Brown said, "We had a great group of seniors, and I will miss them."
Carthage will go on to face Webb City tomorrow afternoon in Carthage.
