Griffons' unbeaten streak continues
The Nevada Griffons remained undefeated this summer after sweeping a three-game series with the Dodge City Athletics over the weekend at Lyons Stadium.
"I'm happy we won all three games," Griffons head coach John Hill III said after Sunday afternoon's game.
The Griffons beat the A's 4-3 and 2-1 during two seven-inning contests Saturday night to make up for the rain-out on Friday, and 7-4 during a Sunday afternoon game.
The doubleheader on Saturday will be a rare event for the Griffons this summer, since their schedule has no double-headers. A change in Jayhawk League rules requires that all scheduled doubleheaders are to be two nine-inning games and only in the case of a rain delayed game can there be two seven-inning games.
Although the weekend games had no problem with rain, the nearly constant 25-30 mph winds blowing in from left field that made the warm, humid weather comfortable for the fans, were not welcomed by Hill.
"I don't like the wind. It makes it hard to break open a game," Hill said, adding that the Griffons had a couple of chances.
He said that the scores for the three games were about what he expected with the wind.
Hill said that overall he is pleased with the team.
"The pitching is better than I expected and I'm happy with the defense. We haven't beaten ourselves. We've been playing good, sound, fundamental baseball," he said.
The Griffons will get their first real test of the season today when they host the Hays Larks at 7 p.m. in a nine-inning contest.
The schedule will then take the Griffons on the road next week, heading to Newton County, Kan. on Thursday, and Derby, Kan., Friday through Sunday, with the next home game coming June 19 against the Springfield Generals.
