Red Sox winning streak continues
The Nevada Red Sox took down the East Newton Rockets 14-4 at Lyons Stadium last night. Ryan Austin took the ball and picked up the victory allowing four runs on seven hits.
The Red Sox offense exploded in the first inning with Nevada scoring seven runs on seven hits while East Newton committed one error. Of the seven hits, four went for extra bases. The Red Sox also had one batter hit by a pitch.
Austin's smooth start was disrupted in the second inning after he walked the leadoff batter. The Rockets went on to record two hits in the inning and scored their first run. Nevada committed no errors.
Ron Johnson lead off the second inning by getting hit by a pitch, steals second and later scores as Ethan Beisner reached on an error by the Rockets shortstop.
The Red Sox turned a double play during the third inning to only allow two runs on two hits for the Rockets. The third inning for Nevada saw them score two more times on two hits while the Rockets committed two errors. The Red Sox stranded three runners on base.
The Rockets scored again in the top of the fourth inning on two hits with no errors by Nevada. The Red Sox went quietly in their half of the fourth after a pitching change by East Newton. Nevada ended the inning with three strikeouts.
Austin returned the gesture by retiring the side, one-two-three, in the top of the fifth. Nevada reached on errors and walks but the inning ended when an attempt to steal second was picked off at first.
With Austin on cruise control he sat down three of the four batters he faced in the inning giving up a single. East Newton left one on base. Nevada took advantage of the situation presented during the sixth inning. Seven batters went to the plate scoring four runs off of two hits, with two reaching on errors and a fielders choice. Taylor Scotten ended the game by the 10 run rule after he double to left driving in two RBI's.
"Ryan Austin did a good job pitching tonight, he got down on himself after giving up a few hits. He calmed down and just threw pitches," manager Jim Rayburn said. "Overall we played good. We had some sloppy moments in the infield but we recovered nicely."
Ron Johnson has something of a magnet in him this year. According to Rayburn, "Ron Johnson has been hit 29 times by pitches and we have only played in 27 games." Johnson moved to that mark by being hit three times in this contest. The Nevada Red Sox next home game is July 7 at 6 p.m., at Lyons Stadium.
