Saturday, August 2, 2008

The city of Nevada, the Nevada/Vernon County Chamber of Commerce and KCP&L will host a special "going-away party" for crime and drugs in Nevada, on Tuesday, Aug. 5. Nevada-area residents are invited that evening to attend the National Night Out celebration from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Nevada Aquatic Center located at Atlantic and Ash streets.

In addition to the pool being open to the public during the evening, KCP&L employees are donating and cooking hot dogs. Beverages and snacks will also be provided by local community agencies.

There will be activities for children including games, giveaways and more. Many local community agencies and law enforcement groups are participating in this year's event. Police, ambulance, fire and other emergency vehicles will be on display, to the delight of all attendees.

The Nevada event is part of the 25th annual National Night Out celebration, which is expected to involve more than 35 million people in approximately 11,000 communities across the United States. National Night Out is designed to increase crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support and participation in anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and let criminals know that citizens in their neighborhoods are fighting back.

As part of the National Night Out observance in Nevada, residents are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and spend the evening at the Aquatic Center with their neighbors and law enforcement partners.

Kathi Wysong, former executive director of the Nevada/Vernon County Chamber of Commerce said, "Always a favorite end-of-summer event, National Night Out brings families and agencies together. We create a fun atmosphere with a powerful message that is heard across the nation -- Say goodbye to crime and drugs! There's no room for them here."

Dave Millam, operations supervisor for KCP&L in Nevada, said, "As the electric provider for Nevada, KCP&L is glad to partner with the City of Nevada and the Nevada Vernon County Chamber of Commerce on the 2008 National Night Out celebration in Nevada." KCP&L provides electric service to approximately 6,100 customers in Nevada and more than 800,000 customers in Missouri and Eastern Kansas.

Based in Kansas City, Mo., KCP&L owns electric power generation and operates electric in 47 Missouri and Kansas counties, with a service territory of more than 18,000 square miles. More information is available at www.KCPL.com.
