Saving the cypress

Friday, August 29, 2008
These majestic cypress trees that have towered over the southeast corner of the former Nevada State Hospital front lawn for decades may soon gain protection from future development. Members of the Nevada Parks and Recreation are looking for some way to prevent any harm from coming to these trees that are native to southern swamps. Parks board member Shirley Bastow said that these trees are over 100 years old, having been brought to Nevada from Louisana by the person who built the State Hospital building. She said that she was told there is spring beneath the trees that has helped them to thrive in an unlikely location. The original State Hospital No. 3 building was completed in 1887. --Ralph Pokorny/Daily Mail
