MOUND CITY, Kan. -- Uniontown improved to 2-1 with a 34-20 win over Jayhawk-Linn in a non-league football contest here Friday night. Meanwhile, Jayhawk-Linn remains winless on the season.

The Eagles broke things open a bit in the late part of the second quarter and in the third, when they scored 22 unanswered points.

Ethan Hammond got Uniontown on the board first with a 28-yard run. But the Eagles were unsuccessful on the extra point. Jayhawk-Linn lead after one via a 60-yard scoring pass from quarterback Ryan Sutherland to McCann and a successful extra-point kick.

David Shank put the Eagles back in front on a one-yard run early in the second. Uniontown went for two but didn't make it, leaving it at 12-7. Sutherland then hit McCann again, this time on a four-yard pass to hold a 13-12 lead after the PAT failed.

Ben Dixon returned the ensuing kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown, giving the Eagles the lead for good. Travis Aikins scored the two-point conversion to put Uniontown ahead, 20-13.

Hammond scored on a three-yard run and Shank went over the goal line from two yards out in the third period. Drew Johnson hit PAT kicks both times. Jayhawk-Linn scored in the fourth quarter on an eight-yard run by Sutherland.

Team yardage totals were very close. Uniontown gained 197 of its 270 total yards on the ground while Jayhawk-Linn produced 173 of its 263 yards in the air.

Uniontown head coach Jim Mason noted that the Eagles had an odd statistic: Three different players completed a pass and each one went to a different receiver. In fact, one of them threw a pass and caught one. Aikins, normally, the Eagles' tailback, started at quarterback because Zach Travis had been ill most of the week. Aikins hit Cody Tinsley on his pass for 23 yards. Travis found Hammond on his pass for 16. And Hammond connected with Johnson for 34.

Uniontown will host Frontenac Friday night while Jayhawk-Linn will go to Osawatomie for a Pioneer League game.
