Cottey volleyball takes two more wins at home tournament
The Cottey College Comets won two of three matches in their home tournament over the weekend.
In match one against East Central, Cottey was defeated in two sets 22-25, 12-25. Ashleigh Bryson, Chrissy Echevarria and Jesse Jargowsky each finished with one ace in the match, while Bryson led the team with six assists and Lauren Jenkins had five kills.
Jenkins and Anna Cruse had two blocks each and Echevarria led with 11 digs in the match.
Cottey's luck took a turn for the better on the second day of the tournament as they beat Meramec in their first match of the day 25-21, 26-24. "Set two was shaky toward the end, as we had to come back from a point deficit that we were inflicting on ourselves from unforced errors," head coach Marla Foreman said.
Kaley Rogers led the team with three aces while Bryson accounted for all 21 of the Comets' assists in the match. Cruse added another seven blocks to her total for the tournament and Jargowsky led with 17 digs in match two.
Cottey took their second win of the tournament in the final match as they knocked off Florissant Valley 25-13, 25-21. The Comets had six players who put up an ace in the final match and Jargowsky added 10 more assists -- a team high in the match.
Jargowsky also led the team with 10 digs while Cruse added six blocks and Rogers and Jenkins notched six kills apiece. The tournament pushed the Comets' season record to 12-4 going into the final month of matches.
Cottey has received votes to be ranked in the NJCAA top 20 and has a few players listed on their top 50 statistics polls as well, Foreman said. Cottey's next match is at home in a triangular against Baptist Bible College and Stephens College on Oct. 4.
