Conservation Department sponsors fly-fishing workshop

Thursday, November 13, 2008

The Missouri Department of Conservation is sponsoring a fly-fishing and fly-tying workshop from 9 a.m to 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6.

Some of the activities that will be featured at this workshop include lessons on where to fish in southwest Missouri, what it takes to entice a variety of fish species around the state, how to select rods, reels, line, leader and types of flies, as well as all of the needed information to enjoy the unique experience fly-fishing offers. A basic background on aquatic insect and fish biology will be given as well, to ensure that all participants can successfully identify what fish will feed on.

Handling, cleaning and cooking tips will also be offered, as well as recipes for preparing your fish in the best possible ways. This program is free and open to the public.

Adults and children 11 and older with adult supervision are welcome to attend. The program will be held at Walter Woods Conservation Area -- five minutes south of Joplin -- and participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather.

Participants may bring their own gear, but gear will be available for all to use and all participants must pre-register by contacting the Missouri Department of Conservation Joplin office at (417) 629-3423. Staff will be available to answer questions and provide additional information Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
