Council to discuss community center contract

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

The construction of a new community center will take another step forward when the Nevada City Council considers the first reading of a design-build contract with Crossland Construction Company to build the new City-County Community Center at the corner of Ash and Hunter streets.

Other items on the Council agenda include the first reading of special ordinances to donate lots at 1024 E. Locust and 715 E. Ashland streets to Habitat for Humanity for the construction of new homes; amend the Public Safety Department budget to allow them to use two grants to pay overtime for special projects and a change order for the city's contract with G&G Construction to clear an electrical right-of-way to the new wastewater treatment plant.

The council will also be considering the first reading of a special ordinance accepting a permanent 40-foot easement from Eric and Martha Barwick for improvements to the south interceptor sewer line, as well as, a change order for Nevada Municipal Sports Complex with Reed Dozing and Contracting LLC.

The council also will be holding a public hearing and consideration of a zoning change from R-1, single family, to C-2, general business, so Dick Shorten can open a used car lot at 913 E. Walnut.

Other business includes the final reading of a general ordinance correcting the language in the city's current ordinance regulating firearms in city buildings and a special ordinance amending the city's contract with Allgeier Martin and Associates Inc. for the design and construction phase of the city's new wastewater treatment plant.

They will also be considering the appointment of Robin Fisher to the planning commission and Jim Erpenbach to the library board and hearing a request from Harlan Moore, city manager, to be allowed to purchase used equipment for the parks department, public works department, wastewater treatment plant and the street department without needing to solicit bids, as usually required by the city purchasing policy, due to varying availability of used equipment.
