Pleasanton boys second, Uniontown third at Crest Invitational

IOLA, Kan. -- Pleasanton's boys finished in second place while Uniontown's took third place at the Crest Invitational, held at Riverside Stadium here Thursday evening.

Lyndon won the meet with 84 points while Pleasanton finished just one point behind. Uniontown scored 66 points to finish six ahead of fourth-place Lebo.

Uniontown's girls finished one point out of third place with 74 points. Pleasanton was eighth with 28 points. Burlington won the girls' side with 108 points.

Uniontown's boys won three events to Pleasanton's two but the Blu-Jays won more total medals, 16 to 8.

Pleasanton's event winners were David Sowards in boys' pole vault, clearing 10 feet even and winning a tie-breaker against a competitor from Iola, and the 4x100-meter relay team, which turned in a time of 46.38 seconds.

David Shank won two of Uniontown's three gold medals. He recorded a distance of 45 feet, 1 1/2 inches in shot put and 131' 5 1/2" in discus, winning the latter event by more than 9 feet. Ben Dixon was the Eagles' other event winner with a time if 11.27 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

Other Pleasanton medalists:

* Skyler Martin was second in discus with a throw of 123' 1 1/2".

* The 4x400-meter relay team turned in a time of 3:43.53 for second place.

* Jon Ransier, Cody Maloney and Joey Shoopman tied for third in high jump, each clearing 5' 6".

* Daniel Streeter finished third in the 800-meter run in 2:15.26.

* T.J. Davis finished third in the shot put with a mark of 42' 7 1/2" while Reid Hein was fourth at 40' 7 1/2".

* Mason Coffman took third in pole vault, clearing 8' 6" while Dylan Ellis tied for fourth at 8 feet even.

* Maloney finished fourth in the 400 meters in 55.92.

* Sowards was fifth in the 100-meter dash in 11.72 while Dakota Kern was sixth in 11.74.

* Ransier finished sixth in the 200 in 24.36.

For Uniontown:

* Colt Bartlett was second behind Shank in the shot with a mark of 44' 6" and also placed fourth in the discus at 115' 3 1/2".

* Dixon took second in the long jump with a mark of 19' 10", just one-half inch behind the winner, Shields of Southern Coffey County. He was also second in the 200 meters in 23.48.

* Wilson was second for Uniontown in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 16.59.

On the girls' side, Uniontown won nine medals to eight for Pleasanton. The Eagles won five events and saw only one medalist finish lower than third. Pleasanton had no event winners with a high finish of third place.

Uniontown's medalists:

* Kait Spainhoward took two events. She won shot put with a mark of 36' 2" and discus by two feet at 104' 10".

* Abbie Smith won long jump with an effort of 17' 0 1/2" while teammate Emily Aikins was third with her mark of 15' 5 3/4".

* Aikins won the 100-meter dash in 13.02 seconds and the 200 meters in 27.63.

* Smith placed second in the girls' 100-meter high hurdles in 17.29 and the 300 hurdles in 53.34.

* Jessica Schaaf finished fifth in the 1,600 meters in 6:43.58.

Pleasanton's highest finish was recorded by Kim Robinson in shot put with a mark of 32' 8 3/4". Darla Snyder was fourth at 32' 8 1/2". Robinson also finished fourth in discus at 96' 4" with Snyder fifth with a mark of 91' 5 1/2".

Also for Pleasanton:

* Rachel Richmond cleared 4' 6" in high jump to finish fourth while Codi Byington was fifth at 4' 4".

* Cheyanne Reynolds was fifth in javelin with a throw of 88' 9".

* Byington finished fifth in the 100 meters in 14 seconds even.

* Richmond was fifth in the 400 meters in 1:09.65.

Both Pleasanton and Uniontown will return to Iola for their next meets. Pleasanton will take part in the Iola junior varsity meet Monday. Both schools will run in the Three Rivers League Relays Thursday, with Crest as the host.
