Olive Anne Shafer
Olive Anne Shafer, 87, Nevada, passed away on Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at Barone Alzheimer's Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born Nov. 28, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo., to Louis Koehler and Violet Lucille Anna Williams Koehler. She married Edward Leroy Shafer on July 27, 1938, in Nevada, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 1991.
Olive was born and reared in Kansas City. She came to Vernon County at the age of 17 and spent the rest of her life here. She worked for Key Work Clothes and later for Nelly Don ,where she was a charter member of the garment workers union. Olive retired in 1988 after 30 years of service. She was a member of the Glory Choir at the First Baptist Church and was a former president of the local PTA. Her membership at First Baptist Church and all of its programs were very important to her.
Survivors include one son, Bill Shafer and his wife Paula, Nevada; three daughters, Lucille Claypool and her husband Richard, Richards, Mo.; Becky Hoffman and her husband Jerry, Grandview, Mo., and Judy Jenkins and Kevin Frame, Nevada; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three children, Richard Shafer, Lee Shafer, and Bonnie Sue Shafer; one grandchild, Kimberly Shafer; and one brother, Dick Koehler.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 20, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family will receive friends from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the Vernon County Cancer Relief Fund or the Alzheimer's Foundation in care of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
