Jim Bardoni reaches for a dog kennel from Craig Blackhall. The two were in town to assist Vernon County People For Pets transport three dogs from Nevada to Denver via Kansas City. Bardoni said he's helped transport dogs before but this is the first time he's done it by airplane. Through a nationwide network, VCPFP has found homes for many pets; in April, a Border Collie named Jack was flown to a new home in Highland, Ind. The group has been working with abandoned and unwanted animals since early 2006. The organization is licensed by the Missouri Department of Agriculture as a rescue using foster homes, and is 501c(3) not-for-profit certified. The group does not have a facility, but takes in pets to foster in their homes and yards until a permanent adoptive home can be found. At the present time, there are about five fosters who volunteer their time and homes to care for pets while searching for a new home. The group is 100 percent volunteer and operates solely on donations. The number of pets they are able to help depends on donations and space available in foster care. During the past three years, the group has found homes for more than 600 pets from our community.
