Nevada Speedway season champions crowned

Saturday, September 5, 2009

It was a beautiful evening for the Season Championship at Nevada Speedway. The evening of Saturday, Aug. 29 proved to be an exciting event for a good crowd of dedicated race fans to come out and see who would take the Championship in each class.

There were driver introductions in each class before their features. They were all good races and close points for all, with the Modifieds and Late Models keeping close right down to their official finishes.

Street Stock

The street stocks were first to take the oval for the heat races. Points leader Dustin Wyland set the pace to green flag racing. The 10K Kenny Shaw headed for the pits after completing the first lap. Wyland led all of the laps to claim the win with Eddie Fox in second, and Rick Cash in third.

Chase Domer brought the pack around to catch the green flag in the second Street heat. Devin Irvin broke into an early lead. On lap four, Chris Hendren spun to the infield out of turn one.

Darren Danner also spun coming out of turn one in lap six. He made the restart, but headed for the pits. On the final lap, Hendren got low out of four and bumped the tire in the corner and ran up on top of the next tire, kissed the ground with the nose of his car. He kept up the acceleration and roared past the flag stand.

Irvin captured the checkered flag. Chase Domer finished second with Hendren in third.

Points leader Dustin Wyland took an early lead in the feature. Darren Dennison and Rick Cash spun in turn one on lap two to bring the field to an early caution.

Before the field can make it around the clay again, the yellow flew for Cash and he was out for the evening. At the checkered flag, it was Wyland, Eddie Fox in second, with Chase Domer in third and Chris Hendren in fourth.

Devin Irvin made it in fifth, followed by Kenny Shaw and then Dennison. Congratulations to Dustin Wyland for becoming the 2009 Street Stock Season Champion.

Factory Stock

For the first time in 39 years, Tiny Joles was not able to make the field on Championship night at Nevada Speedway. However, we were all happy to see him in the stands watching the show.

The first Factory Stock heat had Shawn Hendren sitting on the pole. Joey Thornburg was unable to make the show.

Hendren took an early lead while Willy Oxendine left the track on lap three. Hendren took the win with Mark Godsey finishing second and Jeff Douty claimed third with Devin Wehmeyer in fourth.

"Screamin'" Karl Lehmann set the pace for the next Factory heat. He took the lead and never looked back until the checkerd flag dropped. Tim Phillips placed second with Justin Luther in third and Arren Ashley completing the field.

Shawn Hendren, points leader coming into the feature, came out in front early on lap six. Devin Wehmeyer and Tim Phillips got hooked up in turn four, running into the infield tire.

Mark Selsor took advantage of the caution to head for the hot pit and was able to return to the field. The cars were brought to a stop on the back straightaway while Phillips and Wehmeyer got their cars untangled from each other.

Both were able to return to racing. With only one more lap down, Jeff Douty spun coming out of turn three. The show was plagued with another caution when Lehmann was forced to the hot pit with a flat tire.

On the restart, Mark Godsey spun between turns one and two. Douty got into Selsor and Selsor came to a stop.

Both cars went to the pits and were out for the evening. Finally back under green, the race was completed under time constraints.

Shawn Hendren took the win and claimed the points championship for 2009 in the Factory Stock division. Mark Godsey took second with Karl Lehmann in third. Justin Luther placed fourth, Wehmeyer in fifth and finally, Tim Phillips.

Modified

In the Modified division, Brian Bolin sat on the pole for the first of three heats. Bolin came out to the front and led all of the laps for the heat.

The 1x of John Pilcher brought out the caution on lap one as he spun and kissed the wall on the front straight. He headed for the pits, unable to complete the race.

Bolin went on to take the win, followed by Dustin Campbell in second and Zach Marsh in third.

Craig Wood brought the next modified heat around to start. Wood and Josh Poe battled lap after lap, coming through turn four side-by-side. Wood kept his edge and took the win with Poe in second.

Cody Elnicki took third and Travis Dobbs finished fourth.

In the final Modified heat, Lucas Dobbs set the pace. Greg Pitrowski brought out the yellow flag as he slowed on the back straightaway and had to be pushed to his pit on lap six.

Jesse Willard reclaimed his lead on the restart and took the checkered flag. Lucas Dobbs came in second and Mark Daye got third place.

With Bolin on the pole, then Craig Wood and Lucas Dobbs, the top three started the 2009 Chamionship Modified Feature with a span of only 35 points. The racing got under way with Bolin out in front with Dobbs and Wood battling for second.

On lap 10, Scotty Bough went low, trying to gain positions and collided with an infield tire, bringing out the yellow. This brought the field back together for the restart and a change in the second position as Wood took it from Dobbs.

Three more laps passed before the caution came out for the 28 of Marsh, who headed for the hot pit. On lap 20, Daye brought out the yellow.

The final caution of the race was a hook-up between Travis Dobbs and Cody Elnicki, but both completed the show. And at lap 22 of 25, the second position swapped back.

Bolin claimed another win and one more championship. Lucas Dobbs took second with Craig Wood in third.

Jesse Willard placed fourth and Dustin Campbell took fifth, followed by Elnicki, Zach Marsh, Scotty Bough, Travis Dobbs, Josh Poe and Mark Daye.

These drivers have put on good shows week after week. And they certainly kept the excitement going Saturday night.

Late Model

Randy Zimmerman and Jack Simmons began the competition with only 61 points between them. Zimmerman sat on the pole in the first Late Model heat.

Donnie Timmerman left the track on lap two. On lap three, leader Zimmerman brought out the caution. Slowing to a stop, he left the track, unable to complete his heat. The 66 car of Ronnie Bunn had to pit and left the race to Jared Addington and Scott Mohlfeld to battle it out, with Addington taking the win.

Jack Simmons brought the field around for the next Late Model heat, but it was all Brian Bolin in the lead position. Simmons also had mechanical problems and headed to the pits on lap seven, letting Chuck Redlon take second with Shannon Phillips in third and Donnie Willard finishing the pack.

In the final heat, Billy Humble brought the racers around to the green flag. Humble set up his lead early as Marty Danner held second.

The battle for third between Mark Selsor and Berry Domer saw them neck-and-neck in turn four with Domer taking third. The XJr made an appearance, but had to pit on lap seven.

The rumble of the horsepower shook the ground as the Late Models made their way to the track for driver introductions. Both Zimmerman and Simmons returned to the field after mechanical problems.

Bolin Sr. made the introduction, but was unable to race the show. Ronnie Bunn was also out early after he brought out the caution twice.

Randy Zimmerman didn't relinquish his lead throughout the race. Shannon Phillips was in fine form as he moved from the back of the pack to run with the lead cars.

At the checkered flag, it was Zimmerman who secured the win and the 2009 Late Model points championship. Phillips claimed second and Jack Simmons came in third.

Fourth went to Timmerman with Humble in fifth, Marty Danner in sixth, then Brian Bolin, followed by Domer and Selsor. Once again, what a show!

Nevada Speedway would like to to extend congratulations to all of the points champions. Moreover, thank you to all of the drivers who came week after week, even when the sky didn't always want to agree with our sport.

Thank you to all of the race fans and patrons who have supported the track this year with all of the trials. And to all of the wonderful sponsors, a biggest thanks for keeping 46 years of racing alive at the Nevada Speedway.
