Council to certify Sept. 8 election results

The Nevada City Council will be considering two election-related matters when they meet at 7 o'clock tonight in the Council Chambers in the Public Safety Building, 120 S. Ash Street.

First up will be the consideration of the first reading of a special ordinance setting April 6, 2010, as the date for the 2010 City Council election for one three-year term on the council. This seat is currently held by Mike Hutchens.

The second item they will take up will be a resolution to certify the results of the city council primary election that was held Sept. 8. The four top candidates will be on the general election ballot for Nov. 3.

Other items on the agenda include the first reading of a special ordinance approving a contract with Vernon County for the collection of the city of Nevada's real estate and personal property taxes and consideration of a resolution approving the travel expenses for city council member Seth Barrett and city clerk Julie Lewis to attend the Missouri Municipal League conference and the GOLD Leadership program.

The council will also be considering the second reading of ordinances to: Add a finance manager to the city's finance department; declare city assets as surplus property so it can be sold at auction and approve a contract with Tri-State Engineering of Joplin for consulting engineering services related to the installation of lighting at the intersection of U.S. Highway 71 and Highway K.

In additµion to these items, the council will be considering bids from auctioneers to sell the city's surplus property on Oct. 10.
