Nevada grapplers fall to Harrisonville
HARRISONVILLE, Mo. -- "Tough night of competition." Those words could be used to describe nearly every event the Nevada Tigers wrestling team competes in this year. Thursday night's dual against the Wildcats of Harrisonville High School was no exception as the Tigers fell by a final score of 52-29.
With six open weight classes, the Tigers are at a very distinct disadvantage against a large team such as Harrisonville that will always bring a full roster onto the mats. Out of the eight classes they were able to fill, however, the Tigers have enjoyed substantial success through the early portions of the year and Thursday night was no exception as they won five of those eight matches -- four by pin.
"Looking at the team score does not do justice to how the boys performed last night," Tigers head coach Devin White said. "Out of the eight matches we wrestled, we won five, four by pin and the fifth by technical fall, beating them 29-16 through eight matches. They scored the remaining 36 points through our open spots."
Freshman Slade Stiles improved his overall record to 12-1 on the year as he defeated Logan Whitling by technical fall while sophomore Tanner Charles earned his 12th win in 13 matches as well with a pin victory over Travis Whaley. Zach Shepherd and Scotty Bough added Nevada's second and third pins of the night in the 140 and 145-pound matches over Harrisonville's Tim Roemer and Mitchell Perne.
Senior Todd Brier kept his undefeated record for the season intact as he took on Jay Price in the 160-pound match. It took nearly all of the first two periods, but Brier was eventually able to pick up his 12th pin of the year, extending his record to 13-0.
The Tigers came into the year knowing that they would be a tournament team that would not fare well in team competition, but would exhibit several strong individual performances throughout the season. They are now set to get back into that element as they head to the Carl Junction Classic tournament today.
