Local artist featured in war art exhibit

A special exhibit including some of the works of local artist and Vietnam veteran Helen White made its way to Texas this summer. "Tribute" expressions of loss and remembrance by Vietnam veterans included a broad variety of sculpture, paintings and photos by various artists and is preserved in the exhibit's accompanying program of the same name.

Each in his or her own way, the artists featured in the exhibit honor the memories and sacrifices of that chapter in history; sharing with the public their respect for those fallen friends, acquaintances and even strangers that touched their lives.

"It's something that people are really beginning to take notice of," White said.

White's Vietnam-themed war art has exhibited at the Veterans of America Art Museum in Chicago, Ill., and at special exhibits in Washington, D.C., as well.

The exhibit was produced by the National Vietnam War Museum in development in Texas and presented at the Fort Worth Community Art Center June 5-26.

I have long been a fan of Helen White and her art, and it is indeed a pleasure to see that she is finally receiving more of the recognition which she has earned and which she so richly deserves. The ranks of our Vietnam Veteran generation are already thinning out, but it is so important that our nation never forget the sacrifices which we made back then, and the shame with which our nation greeted us upon our return to "the world". Many of us bear untreated and unrecognized (by our own government) mental and/or physical scars (especially through the insidious chemicals known as Agent Orange), which are bringing our lives and those of our children and grandchildren to premature ends. I guess that we are passing into another chapter in history, but none of us want to go quietly into the night without making sure that our country never again fails to support its uniformed services, regardless of the political climate which put our military into the circumstances. Helen White's art indeed sends home the message that regardless of the conflict, war is hell for those who protect us and serve us in those places with strange names so far away.
