Norma Jean Shumate
Norma Jean Shumate, 81, Nevada, Mo., died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. She was born March 17, 1928, in Columbus, Kan., to Douglas Monroe Sisney and Mary Jane Hyde Sisney. She was married March 23, 1948 in Bentonville, Ark., to Lawrence Dale Shumate and he preceded her in death Jan. 30, 2004.
Mrs. Shumate was born and raised in Arcadia, Kan., and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1947. She lived in Modesto, Calif., for 45 years and worked for the Campbell's Soup Company for 10 years and Gallo Winery for 22 years in Modesto until her retirement in 1990.
She came to Vernon County in 1994 and lived the remainder of her life here. She was a member of the Milo Baptist Church in Milo, and the Nevada Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 3770.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Tamplen, Klamath Falls Ore., and Pamela Shumate, Nevada,; four grandchildren, Jim Miller, Fort Scott, Kan., Christy Whitworth, Moundville, Stephanie Huckabay, Modesto, Calif., and Michael Spurlin, in the U. S. Navy; 10 great- grandchildren; several step- grandchildren, step- great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse, two sons Douglas Shumate in 1960 and Marvin Shumate in 2007, one brother, and three sisters.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. with the Rev. Jim Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery, Milo.
