Uniontown, Jayhawk girls playing for championship tonight

PLEASANTON, Kan. -- The girls' teams from Uniontown and Jayhawk-Linn will clash tonight for the championship of the Pleasanton Mid-Season Tournament while Crest and Central Heights will square off for the boys' title.

Play in the tournament begins this afternoon at 1 p.m., with the girls' championship set for 4 p.m., and the boys' title tilt at 5:30, in the north gymnasium.

Uniontown (7-3) advanced with a 56-45 victory over Prairie View. Jayhawk-Linn (7-3) scored a 41-34 win over Pioneer League rival Central Heights.

In other games, Crest's boys defeated Jayhawk-Linn, 37-19 on the championship side of the bracket; Uniontown's boys defeated Prairie View, 49-43; Pleasanton's boys beat Northeast-Arma, 50-36; and Crest's girls defeated Pleasanton, 44-31, all in consolation games. In games that did not involve area schools, Central Heights' boys drummed Humboldt, 52-23, in a championship semifinal, and Northeast girls beat Humboldt, 61-31, in consolation play.

Game times for today's games are as follows:

* Girls' seventh-place game, Humboldt vs. Pleasanton, 1 p.m., north gym.

* Boys' seventh-place game, Prairie View vs. Northeast, 1 p.m., south gym.

* Girls' fifth-place game, Crest vs. Northeast, 2:30, south gym.

* Boys' fifth-place game, Uniontown vs. Pleasanton, 2:30, north gym.

* Boys' third-place game, Jayhawk-Linn vs. Humboldt, 4 p.m., south gym.

* Girls' championship, Uniontown vs. Jayhawk-Linn, 4 p.m., north gym.

* Girls' third-place game, Prairie View vs. Central Heights, 5:30, south gym.

* Boys' championship, Central Heights vs. Crest, 5:30. north gym.

Area summaries from Thursday night:

Uniontown girls 56, Prairie View 45

The Buffaloes (5-5) made a run on the Eagles in the third quarter, outscoring them 19-10 go get within 40-34. But Uniontown managed to hold Prairie View off with a 16-11 fourth quarter.

"This was a good win for us," Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said. "Defensively, we really played well, especially the first half. They made a run to get within four in the third but I was proud of the way the girls responded."

Abbie Smith scored 17 points to lead the Eagles with Jacy Ermel adding 12 while also leading in rebounds with eight. Candace Wilson paced Prairie View with 11 points.

Uniontown shot 50 percent from the field, making 21 of 42 field-goal tries. Prairie View shot 35 percent on 19 of 55 and committed 40 turnovers.

Jayhawk-Linn girls 41, Central Heights 34

The Jayhawks outscored the Vikings (6-4) 15-3 in the fourth quarter to take the victory. Meriel Long and Taylor Dawson each scored 12 points for the 'Hawks while Amory Miller added 11. Marissa Cox led Central Heights with 16.

Uniontown boys 49, Prairie View 43

Du'Shaun Robinson led Uniontown (4-6) with 17 points in the victory with Zach Travis adding 12. Ryan Welder led Prairie View (2-9) with 11 points.

Pleasanton boys 50, Northeast 36

Aaron Loggins led the Blu-Jays (2-6) with 14 points while Tyler Myrick added 12. Austin Bogina paced Northeast with 14 points.

Pleasanton led 25-13 at halftime before Northeast posted a 13-8 advantage in the third to get within 33-26. The Jays outscored the Vikings 17-10 in the fourth.

Crest boys 37, Jayhawk-Linn 19

Crest (9-2) held the Jayhawks to 3 total points over the second and third periods and led 31-12 after three periods.

Bryan Newton led the Lancers with 18 points and was the only player in the game to score more than seven points. Taylor Kellerman and Clayton Dierksen each scored six for the Jayhawks (4-6).

Crest girls 44, Pleasanton 31

Crest (1-10) came out on top in a game between teams seeking their first victory of the season. The Blu-Jays (0-8) led by one point at halftime. But a 20-8 third period for the Lancers put them in front, 36-25 after three.

Amanda Strickler led Crest with 13 points and Kurston Gilliland added 10 for the Lancers. Johnnea Saulsberry led Pleasanton with 11 points.
