Nevada Debate and Forensics takes second in sweeps at Lamar
The Nevada High School Debate and Forensics squad has once again earned honors in competition with other studetns in Missouri. The teambrought home a second place overall sweepstakes trophy and numerous individual honors from the Lamar Forensics Tournament on Saturday.
Nevada High School, with 280 sweepstakes points, placed second only to Monett, which finished the event with a total of 290 points. There were nine schools in attendance at the tournament.
First place honors went to sophomore Dakota Mitchem in prose interpretation and senior Casey Long in poetry interpretation. Junior Teryn Greer took second in original oratory. Third place finishers included sophomore Bailey Harbit in dramatic interpretation, freshman Josh Neely in extemporaneous speaking, and Mitchem in poetry. Winning fourth place awards were Harbit in storytelling, junior Scott Hampton in dramatic interpretation, and Hampton and Harbit in duet acting. In fifth place were senior Michael Walters in prose and dramatic interpretation and Long with Hampton in improvised duet acting. Long also took sixth place in prose, and Casey Barker took sixth in poetry. Seventh place finishers included freshman Tucker Wingert in original oratory.
The squad, under the direction of head coach Angie Bin and Assistant Coach Erin McCullough, is scheduled to compete again next weekend at Exeter.
