Marion F. Throne
Marion F. Throne, 92, a resident of Hume, Mo., passed away Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at the Missouri Veteran's Home in Mt. Vernon, Mo. He was born July 16, 1918, in Essex, Mo., and spent his youth in Arkansas. He married Cora Lorene "Pete" Smalling on Feb. 8, 1947, at Springfield, Mo. Marion served his country in the United States Army from 1938 to 1958. He served in the Horse Cavalry in Texas and then was in the infantry during World War II. Marion served in the Italian, Algeria-Tunisia, Sicily and Rome Campaigns. He was in the Anzio Beachhead and captured south of Rome. He was wounded in the Italian Campaign and spent 16 months as a prisoner of war in Poland. He also served in the Korean War. He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star as well as many other outstanding recognitions throughout his military career. He retired in 1958 as Master Sergeant.
Survivors include his daughter, Alice O'Daniel and husband, Jack, Leawood, Kan., and a granddaughter, Sherri Davis and husband, Jim, Hume; his grandson's wife, Heather Pyle, Shawnee, Kan.; and three great-grandchildren, Sadie Davis, Christian and Cassandra Pyle. Also surviving are a brother, Carl Throne, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pete, a grandson, Jim Pyle, his parents, two sisters and six brothers.
The Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct graveside services at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, at the U.S. National Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends and family may meet at the Cheney Witt Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery at 1:15 p.m. Services are under the direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, Kan.
