The first annual Nevada High School Tiger Pride Marching Band 5K Run/Walk held on Saturday, Sept. 11 was "a great community event," according to race director Ann Jones. "It was really neat" she said.

The event was staged to raise money for the band's upcoming trip and it drew more than 200 participants from as far away as Springfield Mo. Jones said the community and the school pulled together to make the run/walk a success. All the figures weren't in yet, but Jones said it looked like the event was going to bring in somewhere between $3,500 and $4,000.

Missouri State Representative Barney J. Fisher prepares for the start of the race as participants line up at the starting line.
This participant planned to be at the head of the pack.

Jones said that 218 people paid the registration fee and that 210 of them actually participated. Some ran, some walked, others were pushing strollers and many had their entire family involved.

Dozens of people worked behind the scenes to make the event come off without a hitch. Jones spent more than four months planning the race. Many community organizations and businesses also helped sponsor the event and see that what was needed to make it a success happened. "It turned out it was just amazing," Jones said.

"We're going to do it again next year," she said. A date has already been chosen, but Jones needs to catch her breath. Serious planning will start after the first of the year. There is plenty of time to plan an event that is scheduled for Sept. 10, 2011. "We look forward to it being even bigger next year," Jones said.
