Nevada seventh grade language arts classes study sinking of the Titanic

Thursday, November 18, 2010

The seventh grade language arts classes at Nevada Middle School have spent the last three weeks studying the ill-fated ship, Titanic. The ship was said to be unsinkable and much controversy and talk still surrounds the exact details of the sinking.

Students have been very interested to learn details that surround the maiden voyage of the Titanic. The seventh graders read stories about the Titanic and watched documentaries on finding the massive ship under the Atlantic Ocean.

Some of the assignments used to help the students understand the tragic event were timelines and cause and effect. The students were also asked to create a project using the facts they learned about the Titanic and the events that led up to the night of the sinking.

Students were given a list of options they could pick from to create. Some of the projects included: newspaper articles, advertisement posters, ship dioramas, labeled drawings of the various parts of the ship, posters depicting what happened as the ship sank, personal journals of a person aboard the Titanic, poems, and song lyrics. The students, and their parents put a lot of thought and hard work into their projects which included many ship models.

The students used everything from rigid foam to wood to cake to recreate a model of the ship. Projects will be on display in the Nevada Middle School lower lobby through Nov. 19 for students and parents to view and enjoy.
