Culinary Arts students bring home the gold from state competition

Students from the Nevada Regional Technical Center attended the 2011 Missouri Family, Career and Community Leaders of America State Leadership Conference, March 27-29 at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Center, Columbia.
Mariah Jones, senior, Nevada; Jordan Kavalesky, junior, Butler; and Nick Hulse, junior, Butler, competed in the Culinary STAR Event. The team prepared a menu of beef tenderloin kebabs with chipotle mashed potatoes and coffee mousse in homemade chocolate cups. The team earned a gold medal and finished second in the state.
Jessica Hamilton, junior, Nevada, attended the conference as a voting delegate. She attended workshops on topics such as bullying prevention, college readiness, and technology's impact on the family. Lyle Catron, retired R-5 teacher served as an evaluator for STAR events. More than 700 students competed in 34 events, including Culinary Arts, at the Leadership Conference.
Louise Lunkenheimer, Culinary Arts instructor, received the Missouri FCCLA Master Advisor Award. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a career and technical student organization for young men and women in family and consumer sciences education.
