Golfers place seventh in tourney

The Nevada High School golf team placed seventh in a field of 13 teams today in the Bird-Dog Invitational Golf Tournament hosted by Webb City and Carl Junction at the Briarbrook Country Club.

Nevada head coach Brian Leonard said that temperatures in the mid-40 and wind gusts up to 30 m.p.h., plus the early season course conditions made it a challenging day on the links.

"As a team we came in with a very respectable seventh place, ahead of Carl Junction and Neosho," Leonard said.

"The competition was strong due to several COC conference schools playing in the tournament to practice for their conference tournament, which will be held at Briarbrook later in the season," he said.

Webb City is a member of the Central Ozark Conference.

Alex Christensen had the low round for the Tigers with an 83, finishing in a four-way tie for 14th.

Leonard said that Christensen, who started on hole No. 4, was 2 over par after six holes, however, the back nine took its toll on him, like the majority of the golfers, due to its length and the weather conditions.

Joseph Ferry finished with an 84, ending in a three-way tie for 18th.

Elijah Solidum, who stared on hole No. 10, completed the course with an 88 for 27th place.

Leonard said that Solidum played the back nine with a 45 and improved by two strokes, with a 43 on the front nine.

Trevor Landis finished with a 101. After struggling on the back nine with a 55, he completed the front nine with a 46, Leonard said.

Taylor Handly completed the course with a 108. Leonard said he had a tough day on the back nine managing a 60, but improved on the front nine with a 48.

The Tigers play Thursday at the Country Creek Golf Course, in a tournament hosted by Pleasant Hill.
